Spanish Civil War • Pablo Picasso was from Spain, but living in Paris, France in 1936 when the Spanish Civil War broke out. • General Francisco Franco overthrew the Spanish Republican government, which had been elected. This started the war in Spain. • In 1937, the town of Guernica, Spain was bombed by Germans that supported General Franco. More than 1, 600 people were killed. • Guernica was near where Picasso grew up. He was outraged and saddened by the bombing and loss of life.

Pablo’s Painting: Guernica 12 feet • Picasso put all of his emotion and passion into what became his most famous painting, called Guernica. • Guernica was a huge painting. It measured 12 feet high by 26 feet long! 26 feet • Go outside with a parent and a tape measure. Measure a rectangle that is the size of Picasso’s Guernica so you can see how big it is!
Guernica • Guernica shows the horror of war. • Picasso included… • A screaming horse • A fallen soldier • A screaming woman on fire falling from a burning house • A mother holding her baby • A cutoff arm holding a sword • A head • A bull, which symbolizes HOPE of the Spaniards overcoming Franco • Can you find all of these things in his painting? • What else do you see? • How does this painting make you feel?
Your Turn • Picasso showed the horrors of war in Guernica. • The opposite of war is PEACE means “a state of harmony between people or groups. ” • What images do you think represent PEACE? • Look back at the images and colors Picasso used in his painting. How could you change them to show PEACE instead of war? • Make your own version of Guernica, but make yours show PEACE instead of war.
