What an EARTH is Phytomining?

Simply put, PHYTOMINING is a form of EXTRACTION. What does it do? It extracts COPPER COMPOUNDS from the ASH of a burnt plant. By burning the plant, the oxygen is reacting with copper. This makes COPPER OXIDE. The ash which contains the copper compound is then put through ELECTROLYSIS. How do these compounds get into the plant? Some plants ABSORB copper compounds through their ROOTS. They CONCENTRATE these compounds as a result of this.

What is Bioleaching?

BIOLEACHING is very similar to phytomining, BUT there are some differences. What does it do? Bioleaching is also a method of extraction. However it extracts copper compounds from BACTERIA. How do the compounds get there? Like some plants, some bacteria will absorb copper compounds. They then will produce solutions called LEACHATES. These compounds are leached from the solutions using SULFURIC ACID.

The Disadvantages and Advantages of Phytomining DISADVANTAGES *que insprational music* We are running out of high grade copper mines, they are disappearing, which means we will have to go back to, traditional mining and phytomining, which sadly, produces lower quality metal. *stop music. . . its too emotional* Phytomining isnt a very expensive method of extraction. Carbon dioxide is released as the plants are burnt which adds to global warming. The process can also take a very long time. It uses waste ores, reducing the impact of mining on the enviorment. Google wasnt very helpful so I cant find anymore advantages. . . sorry. . . maybe it just isnt that useful. .

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Bioleaching ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES Bioleaching is in general simpler and cheaper to operate and maintain than traditional processes. The bacterial leaching process is very slow compared to other methods. The process is more environmentally friendly than traditional extraction methods. Less profit is made from bioleaching which means it is less appealing to buisness men and women. Bioleaching can extract metals from ores that are too poor for other technologies which means less waste. Toxic chemicals are also sometimes produced in this process.
