Physics Important points for Calibration and Current MOBY
Physics Important points for Calibration and Current MOBY status 1) NASA Cal / Val document needs community review 2) MOBY redesign/team structure 3) Upcoming short term schedule 4) Satellite calibration capabilities Kenneth Voss, COAST meeting, 6/30/06, Monterrey, Ca.
Physics NASA Cal / Val planning document • • For those that weren’t at NASA’s OCRT meeting: They have an Advance OBB Plan (Future of Ocean Color) http: //www. icess. ucsb. edu/~davey/OBB_Report_052306. pdf) • And more recently a Cal/Val Plan for OBB Research http: //www. icess. ucsb. edu/~davey/OBB/Cal. Val. Plan. V 4. pdf • Important to review these documents…especially (in my mind) the second. Could have very important implications on what resources are available from at least NASA for Cal/Val for NPP, NPOES, and GOESR. Paula B. has an E-mail account is set up for comments (obbcomments@icess. ucsb. edu). Specify in the subject line whether you are commenting on the Advance Plan or Cal/Val Plan. DUE BY 15 July. .
Physics MOBY redesign/team structure • Dennis Clark (NOAA/NESDIS) retired • MOBY up until now predominantly funded by NASA, with some NOAA contributions. • As of this time the continued team is made up of three components: – NIST, Carol Johnson and Steve Brown – NOAA, Menghua Wang others at NESDIS, and MLML group (under NOAA grant) – UM, small component, myself – Free Agent, Dennis Clark NEXT 2 YEARS ARE CRITICAL FOR MOBY CONTINUITY
Physics MOBY upcoming schedule • Current funding has MOBY ending 3/07. • Submitting NASA/ROSES proposal 7/18 (or so). Future of MOBY will depend on some sort of NASA/NOAA partnership. NASA Cal /Val plan barely mentions MOBY. • MOBY review (led by Curt Davis) on 7/18 -19. Not completely sure of the mandate of this review (how RNO money has been spent? What the overall plan is? How MOBY fits into GOES-R? ).
Physics Satellite calibration Capabilities • We haven’t dealt with vicarious calibration of a Geostationary instrument…many unique challenges. . final instrument design will determine many parts of strategy. • Must make sure that the instrument has the calibration capabilities on-board to get very close, and maintain stability…so vicarious cal is the “final touch”…. .
