Physics Chapter 16 Heat Transfer- Radiation

Heat Transfer Radiation (radiant energy) electromagnetic waves from the sun that pass through space and the earth’s atmosphere to warm the earth’s surface. ALL substances at a temperature above absolute zero emit radiant energy emitted by the earth is called terrestrial radiation The sun emits far more energy and at a higher frequency We will spend a lot more time on the electromagnetic spectrum in about 10 chapters.

Weather Radiation the sun warming the earth. Different parts are warmed at different rates. Convection the air passing over the land sea is warmed by convection. land warms faster but also cools off faster water slow to warm and slow to cool- a good insulator

Wind patterns During the day, air is warmed over the land it rises. Cooler air from the water moves in to take its place– sea breeze. During the night, air is warmed more over the water where it then rises and is replaced by air moving in from the land.

All substances emit radiant energy Radiant energy from the earth is terrestrial radiation. The sun’s radiant energy is more abundant and at a higher frequency Infrared radiation is felt as the sensation of heat and often called heat radiation All substances are also absorbing radiant energy Things that are good emitters are also good absorbers.

Good absorbers are poor reflectors. Shiny objects are poor absorbers of heat When an object emits heat faster than it absorbs- such as the ground at night- it will cool Since even outer space is above absolute zero, even space emits radiant heat.
