Physician Associate Normally mature students with previous healthcare experience or scientific background. Profession engages a new population of professionals who would potentially not have engaged in healthcareer – most students not taken from existing professions. Generalists trained to the medical model over 2 years to supplement – not replace - existing healthcare framework. PA duties complement other clinical roles within a practice. Particularly important in medically-underserved and rural regions.

Physician Associate My day includes a variety of duties. Currently operate an AM/PM clinic seeing approximately 26 -30 appointments per day which are a mixture of acute and pre-bookable appointments. Able to interpret and action lab link reports. Acute and frailty home visits. Public health work including bowel screening, immunisations and prospective CKD lead. Digital consultations. Teaching and assistance with students. Ambassador role.

Physician Associate Prescribing? Not an issue – our patients are set up for electronic prescribing, I screen message on-call GP to send prescription – simple and effective solution. PA frees up GP to see more complex patients with longer appointment times PA is able to see all patients – from babies to pregnant patients, to those on palliative list. CPD vital - invest in staff to get a return and ensure quality. PA – one simple solution to workforce pressures.
