Determining Physical Maturity To identify physical maturity in youth you compare chronological age and skeletal age. Early maturing students are typically heavier and taller Overweight/ obese children are typically more physically mature than children of normal weight Late maturing students usually catch up in height but not weight When chronological age is higher than skeletal age that infers that they are a late maturer.
Determining Physical Maturity continued. . ● Differences in body size are reasons for performance differences when strength and power are required. ○ For example: Males who mature early have an advantage against those who mature late giving them typically a bigger body size and more strength giving an upper hand in activities that require more strength (i. e football, wrestling). ○ It’s important to emphasize activities that rely on aerobic capacity, agility, balance, and coordination rather than strength and size.
Effect of Activity on the Body and Maturity Activity has close to no effect on maturing bodies of students, but should they quit participating in activity it could result into the body type of a non exerciser. Daily physical activity ensures optimum growth of bones in maturing young bodies Inactivity for prolonged periods of time leads to fragile bones Males early maturity help them perform better on motor task
Take Away for Physical Educators Students DO NOT mature at the same rate, as PE teachers we need to be able to accommodate to ALL students. Activities need to be appropriate for students of all skill levels, body times, and physical maturity
