Phylum Echinodermata
Phylum Echinodermata echino = spiny dermata = skin = spiny skin § includes sea stars, brittle stars, sea cucumbers, sand dollars, seas urchins §
Class Asteroidea § includes sea stars § sea stars have a water vascular system which allows for them to move water and filter their food
Water Vascular System § has radial and ring canals which carry water within the starfish § has a madreporite which is the opening to the water vascular system which allows water to enter or leave § have tube feet which attaches the animal to the substrate
the starfish uses the tube feet to attach to bivalves and uses the water vascular system to pry open the bivalve
starfish have the ability to regenerate missing or lost parts as long as their central disc is present
Class Echinoidea n includes sea urchins, sand dollars, sea biscuits n these organisms are found all over the world in marine environments and graze on large amounts of algae
§sand dollars bury themselves into the mud to keep away from predators § sea urchins have long spines which are used for defense § sea urchins have their body encased in ribbed, box-like case
Class Ophiuroidea n include brittle stars and basket stars n these organisms have 5 appendages which are flexible n the arms are attached abruptly to the central disc
brittle stars move more rapidly than sea stars n they can be found in most parts of the world from the Arctic and Antarctic to the tropics n tend to live in deeper waters n
Class Holothuroidea n includes sea cucumbers n these organisms display radial symmetry n have an elongated body with a leathery skin
when this organism is in danger or scared it spews out its internal organs in an attempt to “gross out” its predator n mostly found in the bottom of the sea n sea cucumbers feed primarily on plankton n
Class Crinoidea § includes sea lilies and feather stars §have radial symmetry when fully grown § transfers captured food by means of cilia tracts § members of this class are filter feeders
