A phrasal verb is a verb + a preposition or. 1 adverb which creates a meaning different from the original verb
Example: I ran into my teacher at the movies last night. run + into = meet He ran away when he was 15. run + away = leave home
Phrasal verbs have 3 kinds 1. Some phrasal verbs are intransitive. An intransitive verb cannot be followed by an object. Verb+ particle ( no object) Example: He went out. I didn’t put enough wood on the fire so it went ou
This type can be literal or idiomatic. 1 -He went out. 2 -I didn’t put enough wood on the fire so it went out. =stop burning literally = She stood up and walked out. idiomatically= The marriage didn’t workout. = succeed
-Type 2 –A. Some phrasal verbs are transitive. A transitive verb can be followed by an object. A- Verb + particle + object separable. I put up the picture. I put the picture up. The object placed between the verb and the preposition
-Type 2 -B verb + particle + object ( inseparable) The object (noun or pronoun) is placed after the preposition Example : I ran into an old friend yesterday. They are looking into the problem.
This type can be literal or idiomatic. She came across the room ( literally) She came across an old friend. ( Idiomatically) =by accident
Type 3 Verb+ particle He can put up with the noise I get along with my new friends. I’m looking forwards to it. this type nearly always idiomatic the object can’t change position.
