Photosynthesis lab design “Does photosynthesis occur faster in spinach than in in Romaine Lettuce? ” By: Tim Wallace, Jessica Batista, Anthony Tran, Felika Poblah
How Would we test if photosynthesis works Easy ! We’ll test to see if the plant is producing oxygen !! Since the formula for photosynthesis is : Which is also !
how do we test the amount of oxygen produced and why does the formula matter? We had aspirate the chads(hole punched of leaves) to remove the oxygen from the chads of the Romaine Lettuce and spinach. This will prove that the photosynthesis formula is in fact correct because of the byproduct of photosynthesis is oxygen, therefore if oxygen is removed the only way for a plant to gain oxygen once again is through photosynthesis.
Variables in our equation Independent variable : Our independent variables are the type of leafs used for this experiment. ★ Visually Dependent variable : The speed in the amount of oxygen produced. ★ These will be measure by the speed in
Hypothesis If spinach and romaine lettuce are placed in the same environment, the spinach will have photosynthesis occur faster than the romaine lettuce, because the chlorophyll in the spinach differs from what photosynthesis.
Materials & Methods ● 2 X 200 m. L Beaker ● 1% Concentration solution of Baking Soda ● Light Source (Soft, natural light bulb. ) ● Organic Romaine Lettuce and Organic Spinach. ● Scale ● Cap & Syringe
Safety Considerations Before you put the lightbulb inside the lamp, it is very important that we make sure that the power source is turned off. Be careful not to burn yourself on the lamp.
Procedure 1. Hole punch 20 chads of each romaine Lettuce and Spinach 2. Created 2 solutions of 1% Concentration Baking Soda and Water(1 g Baking soda, 99 m. L Water) 3. Put the chads of Romaine into the syringe, fill the syringe with the solution. 4. Begin to aspirate the romaine lettuce until no longer floating 5. Pour syringe contents into one beaker of 1% baking soda 6. Place cup of water on top of beaker
REsults and what we would do differently Our results were correct! after 15 seconds all chads were floating to the top. As a team we had more trouble starting the experiment, and multiple errors such this. . .
