What is photojournalism? • Photojournalism is the art of taking pictures of current events. • The intent of the photos are to express a particular moment in time. • News story told through photographs • Communicate meaning through photographs

Criteria There are three criteria that photojournalistic images should complete: • Timeliness – the pictures have meaning in relation to a recent chain of events • Objectivity – the situation shown in the images is an accurate representation of the events they record, both content and tone-wise • Narrative – the images combine with other news to make facts relatable to the audience in a cultural way. These criteria ensure that the photos fulfill their purpose and provide the viewer with an insightful look into a recent event.

Required Skills • photography skills • sharp eye for detail • ability to capture a story or feeling in a picture. • willing to risk their personal safety in order to get that one perfect shot • available to travel • spend a fair amount of time away from home.

How is it Different from a Photographer? • Strict set of rules that demand that the work must be honest and impartial • Story follows the image • Photography might be a person’s hobby whereas a photojournalist does it for work

Where do their images get used? • • Magazines Newspapers Books Personal uses such as social networking sites

Challenges • Opportune moment to take a photo • Capturing the entire feeling or meaning of a current event or situation using just one well-timed photo. • Mood and the atmosphere of the event • Interesting story • Knowing when to be objective or subjective

Risks

Horrible Weather • The storms are unpredictable • Just because you are taking a picture of it doesn’t mean it cant affect you physically • Caught in horrible rain • Dangerous roads for driving

In Other Countries • Conflict with law • Getting lost • Not used to the weather conditions • Health care system

Crowds • Crowds push and shove • Unpredictable people in the crowd • Never know who might have a weapon • Crazy fans
