“Rules of Composition”
COMPOSITION § The placement or arrangement of visual elements or ingredients in a work of art
GOLDEN RATIO (OR SPIRAL) § It is a geometric constant, a spatial property that encapsulates balance, and an idealized proportionality. § Can be observed in flower petals, seed heads, pinecones, spiral galaxies, hurricanes, tree branches, seashells, DNA molecules, human and animal anatomy
§ A compositional technique whereby you divide your picture into thirds, placing important items at the intersections § Land or sea horizon lines should follow the top or bottom horizontal lines § Some call this technique an oversimplification of the Golden Ratio
What should be adjusted to correctly follow the Rule of Thirds?
§ Find 2 examples of the Rule of Thirds in a Photograph § Draw the Grid on top of your images to demonstrate that the Rule of Thirds is being applied

Students will understand the following Rules of Composition: § Rule of Thirds § Framing § Symmetry § Leading Line
§ Loosely based on the Golden Ratio, or “divine proportion” § Lines are evenly spaced apart, dividing the composition into thirds
Focal points must follow the vertical lines, especially where lines intersect
§ Photograph a minimum of 3 “Rule of Thirds” photos, capturing: § A person as the focal point § An object as the focal point § A plant as the focal point
§ Notes on Framing
§ The technique of drawing attention to the subject by using other objects to frame (create a border around) it
