Course Overview: A photograph is the unique creation of a visual image created by light. The term photography is Greek in origin, with photo translating to “light”, and graph to “drawing”; thus “drawing with light”. In this course students will be exposed to the technical and social aspects of photography. Students will be introduced to 35 mm SLR manual cameras, black and white film processing, and print production in the darkroom. The students will learn how to operate an SLR camera manually, taking control of the depth of field through aperture and shutter speed manipulation. The intention will be to produce a quality black and white print, produce good negatives, and learn to constructively critique their work using the principles and elements of design. In addition, students will study the history of photography, examine current photographic works of art, and learn the ways in which photography is an important mode of communication and visual expression within our culture.

Students who borrow a school camera must take full responsibility for any damages or loss that may incur while the camera is in their possession. If you plan on purchasing a new or used camera for this class you will need a manual 35 mm SLR camera. The Pentax K 1000, Cannon AE 1 or FTB and the Nikon FG, F 2 or F 3 are great used cameras. Assignments & Grading Policy: • Students are expected to complete and submit all assignments on time. The overall photography process can be quite lengthy and therefore requires a great deal of planning. It is the student’s responsibility to continually be up to date on the process of their project in order to ensure that they are not submitted late. Late assignments will receive a significantly reduced grade, unless lateness was due to an excused absence. • *Students will always have the option of repeating any assignment for a better grade providing that they submitted the original assignment fully completed and on time. This means that every student has the ample opportunity for an “A” if they are motivated enough to earn it.
Students overall grade will be based upon; 20 % Daily Participation (This includes clean-up!) 30 % Quizzes, BINDERS, & Homework 50 % Projects (photographs)
“THE BINDER” • Essentially, your 3 ring photography binder, (including the contents), will comprise approx. 1/3 rd of your grade. • To ensure that you are keeping up on your classroom assignments, be prepared for random binder checks at all times- they may happen with out warning. • Binders will be graded during midterm and finals week. • Binders should be kept neat and well organized. • Always keep negatives and photographs in the Front. • YOU WILL BE GRADED ON CONTENTS AND ORGANIZATION!!!!
Photography Quizzing Policy • In order to ensure that you know class material you will be required to pass all quizzes with 100% accuracy. • This means that if you do not get all questions right on the first attempt you will keep quizzing until 100% accuracy is achieved. • You will not be permitted to use classroom equipment until the quiz is passed. (I. e. cameras, darkroom, film, enlargers) • In order to be eligible to take the quiz you will have to have classroom notes with you on the initial day of the quiz. • Quiz grades will be based solely on the number of attempts it takes for you to attain 100%. 1 st attempt = “A” 100% 2 nd attempt = “A” 95% 3 rd attempt = “B+” 88% 4 th attempt = “B” 80%
Plagiarism and cheating…. will not be tolerated and will result in a grade of “ 0” for the specific assignment, project, or test. Plagiarism is the use of the ideas, words, or images of another person in an assignment or project and representing them as your own ideas and/or words. Allowing others to view your test answers, or engaging in any verbal or non-verbal communication during a test will be construed as cheating. Theft of the project materials of others will result in a “ 0” grade on that project and immediate referral to administration for discipline in accordance with the RCS code of conduct.
Field Trips: To enhance the student artists learning experience the art department typically takes one field trip each semester. It is important to note that all field trips are optional and are designed to supplement classroom learning and therefore students who do not attend a field trip will not have their grade penalized.
