Ideas for segmenting Hold up a sound Allocate a sound that pupils have learnt to a row or group. Say a word. If the pupils are in the row/group with the starting sound for the word, they must put their hand up or hold up their sound written on their slate. Where is the sound? Say a word, eg. Bat. Ask pupils where in the word one of the sounds come eg. Where is the ‘a’ sound: beginning, middle or end?
