Hydrophobia: fear of water Note! Hydrophobia can also mean Rabies – the disease that sends sufferers mad. It is called Hydrophbobia because a person or animal with it will show a fear of water.
Acrophobia: fear of heights Note! If you feel dizzy while looking down from a high place it is called vertigo (from the Latin word for whirling)

Why do We Fear? • Your surroundings become unknown • There is anticipation (What will happen? ) • There is the known (You have seen this happen before! It is going to be painful) • Past experiences (everyone’s different)
What happens? • • Flood of adrenaline into the body Heart rate and blood pressure increases Pupils dilate to take in as much light as possible Veins in skin constrict to send more blood to major muscle groups • Muscles tense up • Nonessential systems shut down
