The Humanists • People who were more concerned with the goals of humans rather than spiritual matters • Want to know why and how people do things rather than why and how God works
New Ideas in a New Age • Humanists believed in the power of reason to find truth instead of relying on the bible or other religious teachings • Believed in each person’s ability to choose his or her own destiny rather than being guided by God
Machiavelli • Born on May 3, 1469, Died on June 21, 1527 in Florence, Italy • A diplomat for 14 years in Italy's Florentine Republic during the Medici family's exile.
Influencing Politics • Wrote The Prince • He disagreed with the humanist view that people were capable of improving themselves • Argued that people are bad and need to be forced to do what is right by a strong leader that will need to be ruthless

Renaissance Women • Trained to be good wives and daughters • Only rich women received an education and this was done to make them seem more attractive to men • A proper Renaissance woman was intelligent, yet supportive and obedient to men
