What is PHIA? Law Obligates people who have exposure to patient information to keep it safe, secure and confidential Defines how people who have access to Personal Health Information can use and disclose it as it is considered confidential

Confidentiality We have an obligation to protect Personal Health Information that identifies the patient. Patient Identifiers such as: 0 Name 0 Address 0 Date of Birth 0 Any personal identifiers and medical information ARE CONFIDENTIAL

Personal Health Information WFPS is a health services agency that collects and maintains Personal Health Information from patient events. Through the course of our work, information can be obtained from multiple sources: 0 The patient 0 Family members or bystanders 0 Health care facilities

Personal Health Information Also includes 0 Financial position 0 Home conditions 0 Domestic difficulties 0 Other private matters ARE ALSO CONFIDENTIAL

Safeguards As an observer, it is not acceptable to collect and retain any materials that have been gathered throughout the course of the day. Ask a crew member on how to dispose of materials properly. Some examples: 0 Station print out with dispatch information 0 EKG print outs with patient identifiers

Breach of Confidentiality The only instance that Personal Health Information may be shared is if subpoenaed by a court of law You are required to sign a pledge of confidentiality that is kept on file Please read the terms and conditions should a breach of confidentiality occur

Scenarios You see a patient that you know, are you allowed to share this with family or friends? No, this is a breach of the individuals personal heath information. If police ask you questions about the patient, are you allowed to share information with them? You are not to share information with the police, direct them to the crew you are assigned with. Are you allowed to seek out patient’s health information due to curiosity? No, this is considered snooping, which is a breach of confidentiality.
