Warm-up Questions • • How many chromosomes does the parent cell have? How many daughter cells will be produced after mitosis? How many chromosomes will the daughter cells contain? Compare the DNA in the daughter cells to the DNA in the parent cell.
G 1 Phase • Occurs first during interphase. The cell synthesizes m. RNA and proteins in preparation for subsequent steps leading to mitosis. G 1 stands for growth 1. The cell is growing.
S Phase • Occurs second during interphase. S phase is short for synthesis phase. S-phase (synthesis phase) is the part of the cell cycle in which DNA is replicated, occurring between G 1 phase and G 2 phase. Precise and accurate DNA replication is necessary to prevent genetic abnormalities which often lead to cell death or disease.
G 2 Phase • Last phase of interphase. G 2 stands for growth 2 phase. Follows the successful completion of S phase, during which the cell's DNA is replicated. Rapid cell growth and protein synthesis and preparation for mitosis.
M Phase • M phase stands for mitotic phase. Mitosis (prophase, metaphase, and telophase) occurs during this phase. Mitosis video.
