Phase Therapy Objectives & Procedures
Learning Outcomes Understand the components of Phase Therapy 2. Determine appropriate sequencing of care for clients presenting with a variety of oral health problems 3. Explain the rationale for developing an integrated treatment plan 1.
Phases of Treatment l Emphasis placed on total care l Comprehensive plans must integrate periodontal & non-periodontal treatment l All aspects of plan reviewed with client l “Choices” l Four sequential phases l Guide overall case delivery
Phase I Therapy l Objectives: – Reduce or eliminate all risk & etiologic factors l Procedures: – Treatment for acute problems – Oral self care management – Dental caries management – Periodontal debridement
Phase I Therapy l Procedures: – Occlusal therapy – Minor ortho correction – Preventive management – fluoride, nutrition counselling, mouth protector – Re-evaluation of initial therapy
Phase II Therapy – Periodontal Surgery l Objectives: – Improve access for debridement – Regeneration of tissues – Reduce effects of disease – Improve esthetics l Procedures: – Periodontal surgery, implant placement – Crown lengthening, ridge augmentation
Phase III Therapy – Restorative/Prosthetic Care l Objectives: – Eliminate plaque retentive sites – Improve overall client comfort – Improve esthetics l Procedures: – Final placement of restorations – Fixed & removable prosthetics – Evaluation of tissues in response to care
Phase IV – Maintenance Care l Objectives: – Prevent recurrence of disease activity l Procedures: – Evaluate client’s response to overall care provided – Assess home care compliance – Treatment depends on condition of tissues when assessed
Phase Therapy – Conclusion l Clients proceed through each phase as required l Many clients may not have a need for Phase II or III therapy l Following initial therapy, an interval is determined
Phase Therapy - Conclusion l Integrated Phase therapy requires a team approach l Client must assume responsibility for home care and attending scheduled appointments l Cooperative interaction between all players a must!
Perhaps Phase Therapy Would have Helped! l Little long in the tooth!
