What is Watch D. O. G. S. ? • Watch D. O. G. S. are “Dads of Great Students” • Part of the National Center for Fathering, a nationally recognized organization whose goals include getting positive male role models into our schools • Learn more about the program at www. fathers. com.

Watch D. O. G. S. Mission • One dad or father-figure in our school every day (except Mondays) throughout the year in order to: – Be an extra set of eyes & ears on campus – Assist teachers with individual students or in groups (such as with reading or math) – Be a role model for the kids

Typical Day as a Watch D. O. G: Your day starts promptly at 8: 50 am -Check in at the office. Your child(ren) can come with you. -Sign-in, then head outside to assist with drop-off in front of school. -Your child(ren) can stay in the office and work on an activity, read or help you out front. -After second bell (at 9: 05 am), report back to the office for morning announcements with your kids. -If for some reason, you are not able to arrive until after 9: 05, there will not be an opportunity to do announcements that day. • The parking spot is reserved for you on your day.

Morning Announcements: • Your child(ren) introduce you to the whole school. • Office staff will provide you with a list of morning announcements. This might include activity reminders or Praise Note winners. • PLEASE speak in a calm tone of voice. If you raise your voice, the sound is amplified in the classrooms and everyone will be cringing! • Lead the students in the Pledge of Allegiance: “At this time, please stand face the flag (count to 4 in your head). Ready, begin…” • Picture Time!

Typical Day (continued) • 9: 05 – 10: 10 am: Campus monitoring or classroom time (either in your child’s classroom or another room where you’re needed). Classroom time activities might include small group games, Mighty Math, assisting with art docent lessons, and other activities. • 10: 10 – 10: 45 am: Recess • 10: 45 – 11: 50 am: Campus monitoring or classroom time • 11: 50 – 1: 15 am: Lunch Line Support Remember: You’re here for more than just your kid. You’re here for the entire school!

Lunch Duty: 11: 50 – 12: 00: Monitor lunch line for 1 st lunch 12: 00 – 12: 20: Eat lunch with your child 12: 25 – 12: 35: Monitor lunch line for 2 nd lunch 12: 35 – 12: 55 More recess/ Lunch Line support 12: 55 – 1: 25 More recess/ lunch line support 1: 25 – 1: 35 Site Perimeter Walk 1: 35 – 2: 05 Classroom Support 2: 05 End of Day.

End of Day Survey • Please complete the end of the day survey after your day as Watch DOG. • Nadiya will send the link to you along with the picture that you took that day.

Be Prepared: • Watch D. O. G. S. shirt (for adults) required for all volunteers (order online at www. dogstore 2. fathers. com) • Comfortable shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty • Warm & water-proof jacket

Things to Remember • There is only one Watchdog per day (none on Mondays). • The office staff, students and teachers are counting on you! If you cannot make it, please email the Top Dogs as early as possible so they can look on their waiting list for a replacement. You can also try to trade with another dad. • “Watchdog on Duty” parking spot is yours for the day. Right in front, first spot on the left. • All Watch D. O. G. S. must be LWSD-approved volunteers. Please note this can take up to two weeks so get approved early (online is much faster). Approval must be renewed every two years. • Must wear Watch D. O. G. S. t-shirt when on duty. • The office is here to help! Check in with Brenda or Carlos if you have questions throughout the day. • Watchdog will need to sign a “Rules & Responsibilities” form prior to volunteering.

You’re “on”! 1. Be approachable – smile, talk to students, listen to them. 2. Be smart – follow the school’s policy on appropriate conduct and behavior with students and faculty. 3. Be alert – if a situation arises, please report it to a school official starting with the Associate Principal, Ian Maver (if available, utilize Walkie Talkies). 4. Be available – the goal is to be of service to the school, teachers and students.

“Rules & Responsibilities” Form q Never use the student (boys’ or girls’) restrooms. Always use the faculty/staff restrooms. q Never be alone with students (behind closed doors). q Follow school’s confidentiality policy with regard to students and staff. q Always be visible to others. q Do not be disruptive when classes are in session. q Do not use profanity. q Do not use any form of tobacco on the school grounds. q Do not share religious or political views. q Do not sell or give your official WATCH D. O. G. S. T-shirt to someone who isn’t an approved Watch D. O. G. S. volunteer. q. Never engage in any conduct that brings disrespect to yourself or your student(s), the school, the WATCH D. O. G. S. Program or any other volunteers. q No photography q No cell phone use!

Next Steps Sign the “Rules & Responsibilities” Form (tonight). Sign up for the PTSA (if not already a member). Download the My. School. Anywhere app onto your phone. Log into the app and sign up as the Watchdog for one day per student you have at Peter Kirk. • For those dads who didn’t make it to the training, registration opens to those dads who did not attend training; they may choose one day. • • • 11/4: registration opens for dads to choose additional days during the school year to serve as Watch D. O. G. S. • Become an approved LWSD volunteer (must renew every two years). • Order a Watch D. O. G. S. Shirt, if you don’t already have one.

Waiting List This year we are setting up a Waiting List If you want to be on deck for lastminute cancellations, sign up to be on the Waiting List. When a spot opens up we will email the Waiting List to see if anyone can fill the spot.
