A little bit of history… • 1821 Peru claimed independence from Spain • Struggled as they went through several different types of government and leaders • Economic troubles caused a very violent decade to overthrow the government. • After the overthrow, they still managed to keep democratic policy and elect a president who was able to get them out of economic trouble

How the government works • A republican form of government is a type of government in which the citizens of a country have an active role in the affairs of the government • The government is not headed by a hereditary ruler such as a king. • Divided into 24 departamentos (states) • Congress with 120 members
