What is a persuasive letter A persuasive letter is a piece of writing that is used to persuade someone. To persuade someone means to get them to do or not to do something you want or don’t want. We persuade people by explaining to them why we think that topic is a good or bad idea. When we give reasons in our letter, we call this our argument. I’m sure all of you have tried to persuade your parents, brother or sister, or your teacher to do something before. It might be asking your parents to buy you chocolate, persuading your brothers and sisters to let you have a turn at something, or persuading me to give you extra dojo points!

What do we need in our writing Our writing in a persuasive letter needs to be smart and clear. Which sentence do you think is better for a persuasive letter? A – I believe we should have extra equipment out during playtime as it lets more children stay healthy through exercise while having fun. B – I think we should get footballs and hoops and stuff during break because my friend always steals it off me and it makes me very sad A is a better sentence for a persuasive letter because it gets your argument across in a clear way. Your Task Your task today is this: I want you to imagine in our first assembly back in school Mr Quinn tells all the children that we will be having an afternoon full of fun activities, but he hasn’t decided what those activities will be yet. He asks all the children in the school to write him a persuasive letter with the activities that they want to do that afternoon. You need to write a persuasive letter to Mr Quinn in which you try to persuade him to choose your activities for the school. The activities could be anything you want – trampolining, horse riding, laser tag so be creative. Remember you need to fill a whole afternoon, so don’t just choose one activity and think you’re done. Finally, remember for your activity you need a reason why you think it is a good idea! I can’t wait to see what fun afternoons you would plan.
