Perspectives and Closing remarks Makoto Asai and Marc Verderi 2011 Geant 4 Collaboration Meeting @ SLAC

Preamble • The number of user is rapidly growing and many of them use Geant 4 for their mission critical works. • >2500 citations to our NIM paper, >1 citation a day • Immense number of users, diversities in user domains, user skills • More use-cases to come. More requirements to come. • LHC has started. More data to come. • >10 years of public releases • Another decade to come.

Usability - 1 • Novice & Extended Examples – Novice examples will be fully revised at v 9. 5. – Some extended examples in new integrated scheme are also being delivered. – Join the effort for new-generation extended examples. • Physics lists – Usability is improved quite a bit. Process ordering, G 4 VModular. Physics. List base class, default cuts values, just to name a few. – Cleaning up is ongoing.

Usability - 2 • G 4 Exception – Exception banner and output destination are configurable by the user. – Removal of obsolete G 4 Exception is ongoing. Let’s finish this clean-up by the end of this month. • Computing and Physics performances – Task forces are active. – Tools were introduced and we learned their usage. – Join the improvement effort.

Credibility • Bugzilla – Weekly reminders are now sent to assignees. – Regular review is required. • Requirements Tracking System – New JIRA-based system is ready to fly. – Contents will be updated shortly.

Cooperativeness • Let’s share duties! – Publication editor – System testing • SB members start next week • All collaborators in January 2012 – Responding to trivial Hyper. News questions • Physics/Computing performance monitoring will be added to collaboration -wide duties in near future. • Documentation/example walkthrough/improvement is required. – We learned/refreshed our knowledge on • Coding rules and guidelines • Code efficiency • Thread safety

Strategic planning - 1 • Three works should go in parallel 1. Maintain/improve current code in both physics and usability 2. G 4 MT is promising for a few years • Need usability improvements • Our test bench for bottlenecks 3. Full redesign / re-implementation • Several proposals • We don’t know yet which is the way to go. • Let’s investigate / prototype and share the findings.

Strategic planning - 2 • We must keep meeting to ever-growing users’ needs for another decade. • Long term resource allocation (manpower, computing, travel, teleconference, etc. ). • Close communication with Oversight Board, funding agencies, sponsoring companies. • Effort of convincing our credibility • 4 Category Coordinators had retired in past decade. Some others are “tired”. • Generation transition
