In year 13 you will complete a Personal Investigation (your coursework project) Your Personal Investigation incorporates three major elements: 1. supporting studies. 2. practical work. 3. a personal study. PERSONAL STUDY Recap: Your ‘personal study’ will be presented in the form of a written essay. This what it says in the syllabus: “ The personal study will be evidenced through critical written communication showing contextual research and understanding in a minimum 1000 words of continuous prose, which may contain integrated images. The personal study comprises 12% of the total qualification and is marked out of 18” In other words, the essay you produce will be marked separately to your ‘supporting studies’ and ‘practical work’, but it contributes to towards your final, overall coursework mark. It must be presented as a structured essay of a minimum of 1, 000 words (but 3, 000 is a good word limit to aim for) Your Personal Study is a critical and visual appraisal or theoretical study of any aspect of the visual arts. PERSONAL STUDY Planning your Personal Study It is usual for a personal study to focus in some way on the analysis of graphic outcomes which, in turn, can focus on one or both of the following: • Process and materials (the way an artist or designer uses media). • Subject or theme (the way an artist or designer approaches a similar topic, generally with reference to composition (use of images and/or text) and the visual elements (such line, texture, space, colour etc). PERSONAL STUDY Introduction Always plan an introduction that clearly sets out what you are going to write about, therefore you use it to refer the reader to what you are going to discuss. PERSONAL STUDY Introduction The idea is to give the clear impression that your personal study is organised in a thoughtful, logical and coherent way. PERSONAL STUDY Introduction It helps to think of your introduction as a thumbnail picture of the whole essay. A reader should know the different aspects of the topic that your essays covers, along with the points you write about, just from having read the introduction. In general, a short essay will have at least three full paragraphs; a long essay considerably more and I have suggested that you write six paragraphs for this task. PERSONAL STUDY Main body Paragraphs, like the essay overall, should have a structure. You should start a new paragraph with a signpost sentence that sets out the main point you are going to explore in that section. Each paragraph deals with one idea/subject. In the previous Power. PERSONAL STUDY Conclusion Remember, every well-structured essay ends with a conclusion. Its purpose is to summarise the main points of your argument and, if appropriate, to draw a final decision or judgement about the issues you have been discussing. PERSONAL STUDY Conclusion The conclusion should be a single paragraph, but, if not discussed in paragraph 6, you can go on to a slightly longer discussion such as ‘what I have learned from looking at the work of Saul Bass’. However, it is important not to introduce any new ideas in the conclusion – it is simply a reminder of what your essay has already covered and what you have learned. You must list all the sources you have looked at during your research. For this task have focussed on webpages, but the title of any books and their authors should be listed if you have looked at and used them.
