Personal Protective Equipment - PPE Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) • PPE is protective clothing or equipment designed to protect the person wearing it from injury or infection. • PPE can include gloves, masks, face shields, etc. • If staff are required to wear PPE this will be identified via a Risk Assessment and communicated through their Principal/Supervisor.

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE OH&S Act Requirements • Under Section 28(1)(b) of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, workers shall use or wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing that the worker’s employer requires to be used or worn. In other words staff members have a legislative duty to wear and use PPE that is prescribed by the LKDSB.

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE Ministry of Education Requirements • Medical masks and eye protection (i. e. face shield) will be provided for all teachers and other staff of school boards by the Ministry of Education. The LKDSB is also securing masks for staff to wear as PPE. • All school-based staff who are in regular close contact with students will be required to wear a mask provided as PPE, with reasonable exceptions for medical conditions and disabilities as identified by staff to their supervisor/employer. • Staff requiring a medical accommodation to be exempt from wearing any required PPE, should provide medical documentation including restrictions and limitations outlining the need for the accommodation as guided by LKDSB policies to their immediate supervisor who will then forward it and consult with the HR Department Staff.

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE Additional Situations where PPE may be Required There are situations where staff may be required to wear additional PPE. Some of these situations include: • • • Responding to aggressive behaviour, While administering first aid, Performing toileting activities, While working with students with complex needs or within the special needs program, Maintenance tasks that require two persons to perform the task, While supervising students who have been placed in the isolation room. The PPE assigned in these cases are based on the risks and hazards associated with the task. These situations should be discussed with the worker’s Principal/Supervisor. A Risk Assessment could be completed to facilitate further discussion of the need for additional PPE. Where there is an unresolved concern, then the Health and Safety Concern Resolution Flow Chart should be referenced.

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE SUSPECTED CASES AND POSITIVE TEST RESULTS Staff Masks Types of masks: Level 1 Level 2 Protection: Protects against large droplets, splashes, or sprays of bodily fluid. Protects other people from the wearer’s respiratory emissions. Note: Cloth face coverings are not considered PPE and should not be substituted where a mask is prescribed as PPE. When masks will be worn: • • • By staff who are regularly in close contact. Where physical distancing can not be maintained. Where otherwise prescribed.

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE SUSPECTED CASES AND POSITIVE TEST RESULTS How To Wear A Disposable Face Mask 1. Perform hand hygiene following the instructions found in module 1. 2. Place the mask to your face. 3. Secure the loops on the mask over your ears. 4. Position mask on face by pulling the lower edge under the chin and the upper edge over the nose. 5. If available, fold the flexible nose piece to the sides of the nose. 6. Do not touch the front of your mask while wearing it and immediately perform hand hygiene if this occurs. 7. Do not dangle the mask under the chin, around the neck, off the ear, under the nose or place on top of head.

Masks should be disposed of and replaced when they become damaged, wet, damp, or soiled. 2. Prior to removing mask, remove any gloves or face shields as per instructions found later in this module. 3. Perform hand hygiene as per the instructions found in Module 1. 4. Grasp ear loops of the mask. Avoid touching the front of the mask as it is considered to be contaminated. 5. Pull mask forward and off your head. 6. Discard mask in lined waste bin. 7. Perform hand hygiene as per the instructions found in Module 1.

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE Eye Protection Types of eye protection: Where eye protection face shield might be worn: Goggles Face shield While in the isolation room with an individual with COVID-19 symptoms. Protection: Where otherwise prescribed. Designed to prevent eye contact with large droplets, aerosols and splashes. Note: Eye protection is to be worn in combination with a medical mask.

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE SUSPECTED CASES AND POSITIVE TEST RESULTS How to Wear a Face Shield 1. Perform hand hygiene following the instructions found in Module 1. 2. Bend forward, hold on to the face shield with both hands. 3. Expand the elastic band place it behind your head. 4. Rest the foam on your forehead. 5. Once the shield is placed, check that it covers the front and sides of your face. 6. Once shield is on, do not touch the front of your face shield while wearing it and immediately perform hand hygiene if this occurs.

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE SUSPECTED CASES AND POSITIVE TEST RESULTS How To Remove a Face Shield 1. Perform hand hygiene following the instructions found in Module 1. 2. Remove from the back by lifting at head band pulling up and over head. Avoid touching the shield as it is considered to be contaminated. 3. Discard the shield in lined waste bin unless it is reusable. See cleaning instructions on next slide for reusable shields. 4. Perform hand hygiene as per the instructions found in Module 1.

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE SUSPECTED CASES AND POSITIVE TEST RESULTS How Clean a Reusable Face Shield 1. Perform hand hygiene following the instructions found in Module 1. 2. Using soap and water, thoroughly wipe the interior, followed by the band, strap exterior, and exterior of the visor. 3. Ensure all surfaces are thoroughly cleaned. 4. Rinsed thoroughly with tap water. 5. Allow to air dry or dry with a clean absorbent towel. 6. Perform hand hygiene following the instructions found in Module 1.

Protection: Protects hands from contact with a hazardous substance such as chemicals, blood and bodily fluids, etc. Where gloves might be worn: While in the isolation room with an individual with COVID-19 symptoms. When contact with bodily fluids may occur such as performing toileting, first aid, and spill clean up, etc. Where required by the Safety Data Sheet when working with a hazardous product. Where otherwise prescribed.

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE SUSPECTED CASES AND POSITIVE TEST RESULTS How To Wear Gloves 1. Perform hand hygiene following the instructions found in Module 1. 2. Consider removing rings, and other jewelry that could cause accidental rips or tears in the glove. 3. Put the first glove on your dominant hand, while touching it as little as possible to preserve cleanliness. 4. Then, put the other glove on your non-dominant hand, using your gloved dominant hand to pull it on. 5. Once both gloves are on your hands you can adjust your fingers and the fit of the glove. 6. Avoid touching your face while wearing gloves. Gloves are not a replacement for hand hygiene and can give a false sense of security.

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE SUSPECTED CASES AND POSITIVE TEST RESULTS How to Remove Gloves 1. Pinch and hold the outside of the glove near the wrist area. 2. Peel downwards, away from the wrist, turning the glove inside out. 3. Pull the glove away until it is removed from the hand, holding the inside-out glove with the gloved hand. 4. With your un-gloved hand, slide your fingers under the wrist of the remaining glove. Do not touch the outer surface of the glove. 5. Peel downwards, away from the wrist, turning the glove inside out. 6. Continue to pull the glove down and over the inside out glove being held in your gloved hand. 7. Dispose immediately in a lined waste receptacle. 8. Gloves should never be re-worn.

Perform hand hygiene following the instructions found in Module 1 prior to putting on a gown and after removal. 2. Do not touch the outside of the gown. if contact occurs, perform hand hygiene. 3. Dispose immediately after removal in a lined waste receptacle.

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE SUSPECTED CASES AND POSITIVE TEST RESULTS Student Face Coverings The Ministry of Education has stipulated: Students from Kindergarten - grade 3 • Are encouraged but are not required to wear face masks. Students from grades 4 - 12: • Are required to wear face masks. • Masks are to be worn inside the building i. e. in the classroom and hallways. • Masks are not required while outdoors e. g. during recess.

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE SUSPECTED CASES AND POSITIVE TEST RESULTS Isolation Room Supervisor- COVID-19 PPE The worker will be required to put on all the PPE listed below when supervising a staff/student who is showing signs of COVID-19 in the isolation room. Refer to the LKDSB Isolation Room Guidelines. • • Gloves - optional Gown - optional Face shield Mask The room will be equipped with a hand washing system (sink or hand sanitizer). All items used by the ill person must be cleaned and disinfected (toilet, desk, locker, etc. ) by designated custodial personnel. All items that cannot be cleaned (paper, books, cardboard puzzles) must be removed and stored in a sealed container for a minimum of 7 days or sooner if Public Health approves a return to school.

Personal Protective Equipment - PPE SUSPECTED CASES AND POSITIVE TEST RESULTS Maintenance and Care of PPE • Always follow manufacturers’ instructions for the use, inspection, storage and care of PPE. • Inspect your PPE prior to each use. • Report any deficiencies in your PPE or lack of supplies to your Principal/Supervisor immediately. • Damaged PPE must not be worn. • Single use or disposable PPE must be discarded in a lined waste receptacle immediately after use. Never place used/contaminated PPE directly on surfaces.
