STORY ARC • You should be going back and forth in your paragraphs from actions to your inner thoughts, feelings and emotions.
PERSONAL NARRATIVE BODY PARAGRAPHS DAY 2: DIALOGUE
DIALOGUE • Meaningful conversations with characters that move the story along. • 4 -5 pieces of dialogue MAXIMUM.
DIALOGUE • Go to page 19 in your folder. • We’re going to review some rules for punctuating dialogue and then you will get to practice with comic
RULE #1 • Put quotation marks around the exact words that are being said (the dialogue): Nick said, “I’m going to buy myself a triple cheeseburger and a supersized
RULE #2 • If the speaker is identified before the dialogue, put a comma after that part of the sentence, as in the example above. The comma is between the word said and I’m. Nick said, “I’m going to buy myself a triple cheeseburger and a supersized order of
RULE #3 If the speaker is identified after the dialogue, put a comma after the dialogue but inside the quotation mark like this: "I'm going to buy myself a triple
RULE #4 If the dialogue is a question, use a question mark instead of a comma, like this: "Do you want one of my fries? " Nick asked.
RULE #5 • Use quotation marks only when the person starts and stops talking, no matter how many sentences are being quoted: Nick said, "I think I’ll even add a milkshake. I know I've been gaining weight lately but I got an A on my report card and I deserve it. So I don’t care what anyone says!"
RULE #6 • Sometimes it sounds better to identify the speaker in the middle of the dialogue. • If you do that, put quotation marks around the first part of dialogue with a comma inside the end quotations. • After the identification put the next part of dialogue inside quotation marks: “I’m hoping you can give me my allowance early this week, ” Amanda said to her mom. “I want to buy concert tickets and I’m afraid they’ll be all gone if I wait until this weekend. ”
RULE #7 • The punctuation marks that come at the end of the dialogue (periods, question marks and exclamation points) are always placed inside the quotation marks. • “The concert will be so worth it, " Amanda said, "even if I will be broke for the next
RULE #8 • Dialogue always begins with a capital letter unless it is broken in the middle of a sentence by the speaker identification: • “The concert will be so worth it, " Amanda
RULE #9 • Finally - when you have more than one person speaking together, begin a brand new paragraph every time a new person says something, even if it is only one word or sentence: “I can’t wait for the concert, ” said Amanda. “It is going to be awesome! I got great seats too. ” “I wish I was going, ” said Jennifer. “It’s not fair that my parents won’t let me go. ” “Why won’t they? ”
RULE #10 • Notice that once you have identified the speakers, you don't have to identify them every time they talk, as long as it is obvious who is saying what. • If you begin a new paragraph, as we did with "Why won’t they? ” readers know it is a different person talking, in this case Amanda. “I can’t wait for the concert, ” said Amanda. “It is going to be awesome! I got great seats too. ” “I wish I was going, ” said Jennifer. “It’s not fair that my parents won’t let me go. ” “Why won’t they? ” “They say it’s too expensive. I haven’t been able to save the money up, and they don’t want to pay for it.
