THE Radius in Everyday Life • Radial Tires! • David Fowkles: Footwear Designer --> Rim Designer radius
Periodic Trends • There are many properties of elements that can be predicted based on the periodic table. • When these properties change moving across a period or up and down a group we call this a trend.
Atomic Radius • An atom has a radius just like a circle • The radius of an atom id directly related to its size. • Bigger radius=Bigger atom • This trend can be predicted based on the periodic table.
Vertical Trends • Vertical columns on the periodic table are called groups • As you move down a group atoms get BIGGER, and therefore have a larger radius.
Vertical Trends (cont. ) • This is because atoms below have much more protons, neutrons, & electrons • Example K > ____ • Draw this trend on the periodic table.
Vertical Trends (cont. )
Draw this on the periodic Table
Horizontal Trends • Horizontal rows in the periodic table are called periods. • As you move from left to right atoms get smaller, meaning they have a smaller atomic radius • This is because there are more protons, pulling the electrons closer to the nucleus
Horizontal trends (cont. ) • Example O < ______
Draw this trend on the periodic Table
Group Practice • Place the following in order from smallest to largest: • Mg • Ca • Be • Ba • Ra
Group Practice • Place the following in order from largest to smallest: • Li • Be • B • C • N
Be Creative: 3 Minutes Be Creative!! Create a poem about the Atomic Radius of an element or about the pattern of the radius size by period or group on the Periodic Table. 4 Line Poem: The first and last sentences are the same as each other or contain the same ideas. The middle two sentences are supporting sentences.
