Periodic Reporting Europe and North America Periodic Reports for Europe and North America will be examined by the World Heritage Committee in 2005 and 2006

According to Article 29 of the Convention a) b) The States Parties shall submit periodic reports every six years on the provisions taken for: the application of the Convention; and the state of conservation of the properties inscribed on the List in their territories The purpose is to: 1. 2. 3. provide an assessment of the application of the Convention and the maintenance of the values of the properties inscribed; give updated information on the state of conservation of these properties; provide a mechanism for regional cooperation.

Periodic Reporting Sections Section I (State Party information): Refers to the legislative and administrative provisions and action taken by the State Party to implement the Convention Section II (site information): State of conservation of specific World Heritage properties

North America Two meetings for Canada and the United States (January 2003, Los Angeles, January 2004, Quebec): • Canada-US Steering Committee created • Working groups at Parks Canada and US National Park Service • Integration of reports on Parks Canada webserver and presentation to the Committee in 2005

States Parties with no sites inscribed or inscriptions after 1998 only fill in Section I 1. Andorra 2. Belgium 3. Azerbaijan 4. Bosnia and Herzegovina 5. Iceland 6. Israel 7. Monaco 8. San Marino

Phases V and VI (2005/06) PHASE V (2005): • Presentation of Section I for Europe (plus Section II for North America) to the World Heritage Committee in June 2005 • Completion of Section II (December 2005) PHASE VI (2006): • 1 January – 1 April 2006 preparation of working document for the World Heritage Committee • Presentation to the World Heritage Committee in June 2006

Information to States Parties • Circular Letter of 27 November 2002 (Request to appoint national focal points for cultural and natural heritage to coordinate the Periodic Reporting exercise in each of the States Parties); • Reminder letter dated 21 May 2003; • Circular Letter of 28 December 2003 (Information on Section I and Electronic Tool);

States Parties to do: • States Parties are requested to submit their Section I by 1 September 2004 in both electronic form and signed hardcopy; • Focal Points should work with site managers on Section II; and site managers compile all information concerning their sites; • States Parties are requested to submit their Section II by 1 September 2005 in both electronic form and signed hardcopy;

Timetables States Parties are encouraged to consider the deadlines and update their national timetables for Periodic Reporting accordingly
