Essential Question What does a Performance-Based Classroom with Performance-Based Instruction look like in the 21 st Century?
Performance-Based Learning “If ‘performance’ is defined as an act or process, and ‘learning’ is knowledge gained through study, then the definition of ‘performance-based learning’ is just that: knowledge gained as a learner works through some sort of process. Performance-based learning is basically the type of learning in which a real environment is simulated, and people operate in it to gain experience. ” Jeff Durham, Mercury Technical Solutions
How has classroom instruction changed? Traditional Performance-Based • • Planning from a topic Memorization of facts and details • • Skills covered in isolation Lecture presentation Passive learning (listening) Teacher transmits information Non-collaborative silent independent work Short term understanding that is not transferred to real-world settings • • Planning from standards Student is responsible for their work (goal setting, monitoring) Concepts apply across disciplines Hands-on learning Active learning (doing) Teacher models and facilitates Collaboration with higher order thinking Enduring understanding which can be applied to real-world settings

Why do we need a Performance-Based Classroom?
Performance-Based Instruction • • Engaging Simulates real-world experiences Authentic Differentiated Higher-order thinking Promotes collaboration Enduring understanding
Learning and Cognition “Learning with understanding is more likely to promote transfer than simply memorizing information from text or a lecture. ” Bransford, et. al. , How People Learn
What tools do I need to create a Performance-Based Classroom? 1. Identify desired results: What do I want the students to know, understand, and be able to do? 2. Determine acceptable evidence: How will the students show their understanding of concepts? 3. Plan learning experiences: What activities will engage the students to facilitate and ensure an enduring understanding of the standard?
Steps to guide your Performance-Based Instruction 1. State and county standards 2. Performance-based assessments 3. Performance-based tasks
Assessments • • Inauthentic Fill in the blank Select an answer from a set of given choices Answer the questions at the end of the chapter Solve contrived problems • • • Jay Mc Tighe Authentic Purposeful writing Scientific investigation Issues debate Primary research Interpret literature Solve “real-world” problems
Sample Performance-Based Lesson
Desired Results M 5 G 1 Geometry: Figures/Congruence • Students will understand congruence of geometric figures and the correspondence of their vertices, sides, and angles.
Desired Results • Essential Question: How will different combinations of vertices, sides, and angles affect the shape of a geometric figure? • Students will identify the vertex, side, and angle of a geometric figure.
Acceptable Evidence • Students will model geometric figures and identify the: vertices sides angles
Learning Experiences Geo-Panes Activity • Reading: Sir Cumference and the Knights of Angle Land • Technology: Virtual Manipulatives • Writing: Have the students answer the Essential Question to show their understanding.
Differentiate “Differentiation in the classroom means designing and implementing curriculum, teaching strategies, and assessments to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of all students. S. Winebrenner
