Part 1: The DBQ Packet
Part 1: Objectives To successfully answer document based questions on the Civil Rights Movement. To identify the barriers and methods during the Civil Rights Movement.
Primary Documents and DBQ’S What is a Document Based Question? A Document based question is a type of short response, based upon a written or visual primary or document. (Photograph, diary). What is a primary document? A primary document is a source of understanding that we get from the past. The document has to be from the time period.

Being able to determine each document as either a barrier or method to Civil Rights. 2. To select 2 documents showing barriers to be used as evidence in my essay. 3. To select 2 documents showing methods to be used as evidence in my essay.
Part 2: Directions When you finish the Part 1: DBQ Packet, take out or ask for a copy of the Part 2: Pre-Writing Organizer. You will need your DBQ Packet to complete the part 2 organizer Directions: Go through every document and: 1. Determine if it shows a barrier or method 2. Explain how it shows a barrier or method.

Part 3: Directions Go to Google Docs Click Blank Copy Save your work at the top left as Civil Rights DBQ Essay. Make the following heading Name Class Date Civil Rights DBQ Essay Question: What were the barriers and methods in the battle for civil rights in America? Make sure your essay question is bold and underlined. Type your essay in size 12, Times New Roman font. Double space your work Include paragraph titles, centered and in bold. Include 4 -in-text citations (2 -barriers and 2 methods). Submit your completed essay to Google Classroom.

Example Barriers Body Paragraph One barrier that African Americans faced in the south was segregation. Public facilities such as restaurants, schools and movie theaters separate people based on race. For example, document 2 “Segregated Movie theater, Belzoni, Mississippi” is a photograph of an African American man walking up the stairs to the “Colored Admission” section. The caption illustrates that Whites sat upstairs while non whites had to sit upstairs. This was a barrier to African Americans achieving equality because they would not be accepted as equal if they could not share the same spaces as people of different races. The fact that they had to sit in a different section is an example that people of color did not have the same opportunities as white people. An additional barrier that African Americans faced was………………. The excerpt in document 1 illustrates………………
Example Methods Body Paragraph As a result of these barriers, African Americans had to use a variety of methods to win their civil rights. One method was protesting. There were a variety of protests including _______, ______ and _______. One example of a protest is evident in document 7. This is a photograph of people picketing outside of a southern movie theater in the 1940’s. The people are marching and holding signs that say “Stop lynching” and “Pass Anti Lynch Bill. ” These individuals were trying to bring attention that innocent people of color were being killed because of their race. They were trying to get people to take notice so that they would change the laws so that people who committed these crimes would be punished.
