Peppered Moth Simulation OBJECTIVES 1 DESCRIBE THE IMPORTANCE
Peppered Moth Simulation OBJECTIVES: 1. DESCRIBE THE IMPORTANCE OF COLORATION IN AVOIDING PREDATION. 2. RELATE ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE TO CHANGES IN ORGANISMS. 3. EXPLAIN HOW NATURAL SELECTION CAUSES POPULATIONS TO CHANGE.
Peppered Moth Activity. 1. Purpose: In this activity, you will simulate how predators locate prey in different environments. You will analyze how color affects an organisms ability to survive in certain environments. Background Information on the Peppered Moth Pollution and the Peppered Moth Website
Directions 1. First off, you want your Moth to survive. 2. Therefore, to ensure that your Moth survives you are going to have to color it and make it blend it with something in the classroom. 3. The next period class will then be the predators and will try to find your Moth. 4. If yours survives, you will be rewarded with a prize.
Activity Predictions 1. How many moths do you think will survive? (%) 2. Why do you think your moth will be successful? 3. How did you make your moth camouflage? 4. How do you think students in the next class will find the moths? 5. How do you think this activity models natural selection?
Analysis and Conclusion Questions How many moths were captured in your class? What color(s) were the most successful in your class? Do you see some similarities with the ones that weren’t captured? What did the experiment show about how prey are selected by predators? How did this simulation model natural selection?
