Pennsylvania Hardwoods Development Council Created in 1988 by PA State Legislature – Act 1988 -116: “for the purpose of expanding and promoting the development and efficient usage of forest product resources located in this Commonwealth. ” 21 members: Secretaries of Agriculture, Commerce, Environmental Resources, State Forester; 2 Senators, 2 Representatives; 13 members appointed by the Governor including: PSU, USDA-Forest Service, furniture rep, veneer rep, 2 reps of secondary processors, 2 reps of non-profits, PA Chamber of Business and Industry, PA Forestry Association rep, PFPA rep, pulp/paper rep, and saw mill operator Structure under Department of Commerce
Objectives: Development, Expansion and Promotion n n n Expand hardwood industrial job base Promote better efficiencies including technology transfer Basic and long-term research in wood characteristics and new project development Institutional support/communication between industry, government, university Information Transfer Long-range hardwood development that is sustainable and environmentally sound
Pennsylvania Hardwoods Development Council Amended in 1996 by PA State Legislature – Act 1996 -137: 25 members: Secretaries of Agriculture, Community & Economic Development, Conservation and Natural Resources, Transportation; State Forester; ED of Rural Development Council, 2 Senators, 2 Representatives; 15 members appointed by the Governor including: PSU, USDA-Forest Service, furniture rep, veneer rep, 2 reps of secondary processors, 2 reps of non-profits, PA Chamber of Business and Industry, PA Forestry Association rep, PFPA rep, pulp/paper rep, and saw mill operator, maple syrup producer, State Association of Township Supervisors.
