THE BASICS ATHENS ANCIENT OLYMPIA EPIDAURUS SOUNIO NAFLPIO YDRA SPETSES WHEN TO GO As one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, Athens and the Aegean islands are particularly busy during the high-season months of July and August. With over 160 days of sunshine annually and its mild Mediterranean winters, Greece can be visited throughout the year, but temperatures are more pleasant in May-June and September-October. The Peloponnese shares the milder climate of southern Greece, with etesian winds blowing from May to September keeping summer temperatures low. GETTING THERE Athens connects with direct flights to major airports in the US (New York, Philadelphia), Canada (Toronto, Montréal) and the Middle East (Jeddah, Doha, Dubai). A direct flight from New York to Athens is approximately 10 hours. The smaller airport of Kalamata has direct flights to Athens, and helicopters can cross the Peloponnese coast-to-coast in about an hour. A network of recently-completed highways connects Messenia to Athens, but it doesn ’t cover the entire peninsula. GETTING AROUND You can use a taxi service or private car/van for moving around in the city and for covering small distances on land. Speedboats and yachts allow for moving around in the Greek Riviera, with many small harbors and fishing villages along the coasts providing calm waters and docks. Archaeological sites and most beaches can easily be reached by car, but a 4 X 4 might be necessary for certain mountain roads. VISA REQUIREMENTS Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area. One blank passport page is required for entry stamp in Greece.

FIRST-TIME MUSTS CULTURE A melting pot of cultures and historical eras, contemporary Greece is home to great museums, galleries, art fairs and festivals. Don ’t leave Athens without first visiting the Acropolis and other monuments like the Panathinaiko Stadium and the Temple of Zeus. In the Greek Riviera, visit the island of Hydra where Leonard Cohen used to spend his summers, and where an annual DESTE Foundation contemporary art exhibition takes place (June-September). In the Peloponnese you ’ll come across some of Greece’s most important sites, like the ancient sanctuary of Epidaurus and the city of Ancient Olympia, where the Olympic Games first started. CULINARY Greek cuisine is one of the best and most famous examples of Mediterranean-style diet. Never miss an opportunity to taste local dishes, homemade cheeses, freshly-baked bread dipped in olive oil and crisp wines from small, independent vineyards. The Peloponnese is also famous for its olives and olive oil: the famous Kalamata olives come from here, as well as the precious Messenian olive oil —also known as “green gold”. STYLE Greece has been taking its image very seriously in recent years, with many young designers launching new brands offering contemporary fashion and accessories inspired by traditional arts and crafts. Greek designers have also turned making souvenirs into an art form: seek out the most stylish and original of them in Athens ’ Plaka neighborhood. Many smaller galleries in Nafplio, Spetses and Pylos also offer handmade accessories and decorative objects that you can easily ship back home. GREAT OUTDOORS With its snow-capped mountains, winding hiking trails, underwater caves and breathtaking sailing routes, Greece is a country that will make you want to get out and explore. The Peloponnese has some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Mediterranean, and the many islands and coves of the Greek Riviera make up a yachter ’s paradise. ADVENTURE Mount Taygetos in the south of Sparta is the mountain with the oldest name in European recorded history; it’s also 2, 000 meters high, and a good challenge for any climber. The gorge of the river Neda is also worth exploring, for its waterfall and pool in the forest where you can swim: supposedly, nymphs and dryads used to swim here! In the winter, take a helicopter ride to Mount Mainalo for skiing and other snow sports. HISTORY Being a city with over 5, 000 years of history, Athens is full of unique monuments, UNESCO World Heritage Sites and architectural landmarks from different eras, including 20 th-century neoclassicist and modernist buildings. The islands of the Greek Riviera are famous for their maritime tradition and used to be the centre of large trade fleets; later on, they became a gathering spot for jet-setters in the 1960 ’s. A bit further north, Epidaurus with the sanctuary of God Asklepio - dedicated to wellbeing and medicine, and has one of the biggest amphitheaters in Greece. On the Peloponnese west coast, Messenia is a land mentioned by Homer, and with a rich history marked by the Venetians and the Ottomans. The Battle of Navarino is an important event in the Greek War of Independence (1827), and took place in the bay of present-day Pylos. FOR FAMILIES For a family day out in Athens, visit the Children ’s Museum in Plaka or the spectacular Planetarium in Faliro for a visual journey among the stars. In Amanzoe, the exclusive Beach Club offers a variety of non-motorized water sports, ideal for a fun day at the beach. Costa Navarino has special facilities for younger guests: infants and toddlers can spend the day at the Cocoon, and children 4 -12 years old can learn while having fun at the Sandcastle and the Aqua Park.

DAY 8 Much of Greece’s history is told by its ruins, but the past still lives in the present with arts and crafts that have been passed on by one generation to the other since the beginning of history. Beekeeping is one such craft, well-known to the ancients and kept alive to this day by dedicated farmers. Visit a local family of beekeepers in Argolida, and find out how the tireless bees make their honey from local flowers and trees. MORNING It’s yet another perfect morning in Greece, so seize the day and join our visit to an old family of beekeepers in Argolida and discover the fascinating details behind this most nutritious and magical of foods. The ancients knew very well how to farm honey, and they liked to mix it with their wine. The beekeepers will tell you the old myths about bees and honey, and take you to see an active hive from up close in complete safety; the family also maintains a small museum where you can learn about their tools and the history of apiary farming over the centuries. If you want a more hands-on experience, ask us to arrange the extended tour where you’ll be able to participate in the harvesting and prepare your own little jar of delicious honey to take home (approx. 2 hours)! Refreshments will arrive in the form of a special Amanzoe “honey-bee pick nick”, set under the shade of a carob tree. MIDDAY After the visit you can drive down to the fishing village of Kilada (30 min) and have lunch at the seafood tavern of Giannis Megas, famous for its locally sourced lobster!
