About Pegasus • • A not-for-profit organisation governed by a Board of Directors Founded in 1973 by Bid Williams and Ruth Squires to provide horse-facilitated programs for people living with disability Located at Pegasus Farm -100 acres including facilities and fields Staff: 4 full-time, 4 part-time plus a group of RDAaccredited casual and volunteer coaches
About Pegasus • • • Horses and ponies: currently 16 but looking for more Classes: Run Tuesdays to Saturdays - both individual and group sessions, including mounted and unmounted programs Participants: approx. 60 per week - more horses and volunteers will allow this number to grow Volunteers: We currently have; – Approx. 99 program volunteers – Approx. 67 fundraising volunteers ( Events , Fundraising , Gardening etc) – Approx. 78 volunteers that do both programs and fundraising. These numbers all need to grow to enable to smooth and safe running of both programs and fundraising
What keeps us flying? • • • Volunteers Fundraising – Open Days – Bunnings BBQs – Race days, golf days, Tack & Treasure, Canberra show etc – Events Donations Sponsorships/scholarships Special purpose grants
Why volunteer? • • • To help people living with a disability to develop their abilities To expand your own skills and experiences To benefit from fresh air , physical activity and doing something that is fun and rewarding To enjoy the fellowship of a friendly, happy community, where everyone is welcomed and valued Volunteering is good for your own health, mental health, happiness and well being To share our passion for Pegasus and its wonderful horses and ponies and to see for yourself the joy and achievements they bring to our participants
Volunteering Various options, depending on your skills, experience and interests: • Working in our horse-facilitated programs as leaders, side-walkers or stable hands • Helping to raise funds, for example: – assisting at community events e. g. Bunnings BBQs, Golf Gays, Pegasus Open Day etc – making craft items, cakes and jams for sale at Open Days – preparing grant applications • Outdoor activities, including gardening, farm duties and general maintenance • Office duties, such as records management and IT support.
Volunteer pathways • • • Induction: for all prospective volunteers Basic training: compulsory for leaders and sidewalkers and stable hands Stable training: compulsory for stable hands Disability awareness training: offered periodically - recommended for all volunteers Leader/side-walker refresher and extension training: offered periodically – recommended for all program volunteers Farm maintenance: applicable farm safe training
