Peer to Peer Support Programs Must Be Approved By the District K-12 Curriculum Council June 1, 2005 Law Changed – No Work Study At Middle School Level
Peer to Peer Online/Hybrid Class Rationale • Increase Peer Programs • Engaging Curriculum; Age Appropriate; Aligned with MDE Guidelines • Provide rural districts with a highly qualified teacher of record • Provide local districts with a “canned program” for their teacher of record.
Structure • Elective Credit – Earn extra elective credit (LINKS) as well as the credit for the class that they are supporting the student in (math) – Earn elective credit for the class that they are supporting the student in (LINKS) • Weekly Online Content/Assignments – Quick reads, videos, quizzes, journal reflections, forums • Case Conferences with Building Coordinator • Face to Face Lessons with Teacher of Record
About Autism Spectrum Disorder This week we will being looking more closely at Autism Spectrum Disorder. The content video for the week looks at the different ways that autism affects people. A common saying about autism is “If you know one person with autism, you know one person with autism. ” This means that autism does not affect any two people the same.
Autism: A Different Kind of Right Autism is not a disease; it is a neurological disorder. Autism allow individuals to see and experience the world differently. We want to focus on the strengths of autism throughout this course, not just its challenges. This week we will challenge you to look at the strengths of autism.
Peer-Mediated Instruction This week we will continue to discuss and learn about Peer-Mediated Instruction, which is pretty much typical peers working with students with autism and other disabilities. This week there is a video that shows how sports can be a peer-mediated instructions technique (without even realizing it. ) We will also look at “Peer-isms” from Saginaw High School. “Peer-isms” are helpful hints of things that can help someone be a peer.
