Pedigrees • A pedigree chart is a diagram that shows family inheritance of a particular trait.
Male versus Female • Males are Square (just kidding ; ) – Represented by squares • Females are represented by circles
First comes love, then comes Marriage… • A horizontal line connecting a male and female represents a marriage
Kiddies • A vertical line and bracket connect the parents to their children One child multiple children
Shady characters • A shaded square or circle indicates a person that possesses that trait • A square or circle that is not shaded indicated the person does not have the trait being studied
Labeling • • In order to read a Pedigree, two numbering rules apply – Generation- which is shown with Roman Numerals – Individuals- which is shown with a number These numbers can be used to identify individuals on the pedigree. For Example, look at the pedigree and pick out: II-5
TRY IT • Dave had 3 children with Martha. Sarah is 5, Doris is 3 and Daniel is 2. Martha, Doris and Daniel have blue eyes • Make the pedigree for blue eyes • Check your answer on the next slide
