Pedicure Materials and Nail Cosmetics Materials and nail cosmetics include: • Antiseptic • Cotton, tissue, spatulas toe separators, and slippers • Cuticle remover, nail hardener, base, polish, top coat, and cuticle oil • Foot Scrub, and Foot lotion • Massage Cream • Nail file and nail brush • Three-way buffer • Towels, paper mat

Pedicure Implements (Tools) n n n Curettes- Allows removal of nail debris from the nail fold Cuticle Nippers. Removes dead cuticle Foot File Nail Rasp – Metal file used around the nail groove Toenail Clippers

Important Points to Remember n It is against the law in all states to use a razor or other sharp devices to cut calluses. Doing so, can cause loss of license. n Inform client’s not to shave legs 24 hours before pedicure. Tiny microscopic abrasions can cause irritation and infection n Be sure floor around pedicure area is dry

Contradictions- a condition that requires declining a service to avoid certain side effects • Signs of infection –redness, swollen, pus, warm to the touch, throbbing, painful or bad odor • Skin and/or nail diseases- including ingrown toenails, warts, and nail fungus •

Caution!!!!!! n Clients with high blood pressure or heart diseases or stoke victims, should consult a physician before a service n Hot wax treatments should not be offered to clients with poor blood circulation or a diabetic without a physician’s release n When in doubt, decline the service to avoid adverse reactions from the client

Points to Remember n n Clients are seeking a professional service and relaxation Allow client to guide the conversation, some prefer to be quite and relax Pace yourself to complete the entire service efficiently and economically Have all supplies placed on the same side as your dominant hand for ease of service

Foot Massage n n The foot massage is often the client’s favorite part of the pedicure Do not rush massage Be gentle, but use firm massage movements Speak softly and slow your speed of speech

Effleurage Movement n n n Effleurage – Light continuous movements, gliding, sliding, not in one location Applied with the fingers or palms No pressure is used Massage should be soothing and relaxing Every massage should begin and end with the effleurage movement

Petrissage Movement A deep massage movement that includes lifting, squeezing, and pressing motion n Provides increased circulation in the nerves, glands and muscles n

Tapotement Movement consists of tapping, slapping or a hacking motion § Provides toning of the muscles and deep circulation § Should be applied with discretion and care n

Friction Movement Involves deep pressure in one area at a time n Increases circulation and glandular activity n Stimulates muscles n Rolling, and wringing are variations of the friction movement n

Vibration Movement Includes rapid shaking of the body part, while the fingers are pressing in one location n Stimulates blood circulation and muscle tone n Causes rapid muscle contractions n

Direction of Massage n n n Always massage from insertion to the origin of a muscle The insertion of a muscle is location at the more moveable attachment The origin is at the fixed attachment The belly is the middle of the muscle Massaging in the wrong direction causes skin and muscles to sag

Benefits of a Massage n Relaxation for the client n Skin is nourished, by increased blood circulation n Skin becomes softer and more flexible n Glandular activity increases n Muscles are strengthen n Nerves are soothed and rested n Pain is sometimes relieved

Safety and Infection Control n n n Foot tub must be cleaned and disinfected after every service Remove screen of pedicure tub daily and clean, completely immerse in approved-disinfectant Flush system with low-suds soap and warm water for 10 minutes Weekly soak foot tub in 5 gallons of water and 4 teaspoons of bleach. Let sit overnight Drain and flush the system the next day

Post-Pedicure Service n n n Clean all implements in hot and soapy water, rinse and immerse in a disinfectant solution or sterilizer, if available Store cleaned implements in a covered container Disinfect working station and foot spa according to State regulations Dispose of any supplies that can not be disinfected Clean towels with bleach
