Definition • A live born neonate delivered before 37 completed weeks of gestation • 11 -13% in Pakistan
ETIOLOGY • Maternal causes: • Anemia, malnutrition, twin pregnancy, preeclampsia, chronic diseases, infections, smoking, structural uterine abnormalities • Fetal causes: • Fetal distress, twins, chromosomal disorders, infections, erythroblastosis fetalis • Others: • Polyhydramnios, PROM, Trauma
Problems of Prematurity • • Hypothermia Hypoglycemia Hypocalcemia RDS IVH Jaundice NEC

Premature Neonate
Management • Delivery room care: • Attended by pediatrician, proper CPR, gentle handling, maintain Normo-thermia and Normo -glycemia • Immediately transport to NICU
NICU Care • • Temperature Oxygen Fluids & electrolytes Feeding Protect from infections Supplements Identification and treatment of complication
