Payroll vs Stipend Desk • Payroll – – Taxes withheld (will receive W-2) Mandatory DC Plan contributions Funds available for pre-tax benefits GME housing allowance is paid via Payroll • Stipend Desk (e. g. , grant salary support) – No taxes withheld (will receive annual “Transaction Detail” from GME, but should also keep paystubs) – Must pay quarterly Estimated Tax (forms 1040 -ES and 540 -ES) – Funds are not available for pre-tax benefits – Many fellows on grants will receive two separate monthly paychecks: one from Stipend Desk and one from Payroll
