Why choose BTEC Science? • A-Level qualifications are assessed entirely on exams sat at the end of yr 13. BTEC exams are in year 12 and year 13, there are internally assessed units that account for at least 45% of the overall assessment. • Hands on practical experience. • Directly related to working practices in a science environment. • Often gives the opportunity to achieve grades that lead to science university courses and careers.

How the course is assessed? There are 2 methods of assessment used. (1) External This will be in the form of an exam sat in May/June. Unit 1 will consist of a Biology, Chemistry and Physics section. Unit 3 will consist of a practical and a written paper done under exam conditions and sent off to the exam board. Your mark will be converted to a grade that is either Unclassified (U), Pass (P), Merit (M), Distinction (D), Distinction star (D*) (2) Internal Unit 2 + Unit 10 – You will be given an assignment brief and complete work in lessons that will be marked by your teacher against the criteria on the brief to give a grade of Unclassified, Pass, Merit or Distinction. Overall Your final grade of Unclassified (U), Pass (P), Merit (M), Distinction (D), or Distinction star (D*) is formed from a combination of the units you have completed over the two years. It will be weighted towards the units that take the most time.
How does this relate to what I will do in lessons? Externally assessed units (1&3) Your teacher will give (approximately) half termly assessments that are as close to the nature of the exams you will sit as possible. You will get feedback on these assessments. Internally assessed units (2&10) You will be given generic verbal feedback on the work you produce towards your assignments. When an assignment has been completed your teacher will mark your work and this will count towards your final grade.
