Peace and Conflict Terrorism
Read Hoffman Article…not that Hoffman • Peace and conflict studies distinguish between regular and irregular military forces and warfare. • Regular, of course, refers to the chain of commandbased government army/combat forces. Anyone fighting outside of that legitimate military establishment is considered "irregular. " • Hoffman distinguishes between 3 types of irregulars/tactics: 1. Terrorists/Terrorism 2. Guerrillas/Guerrilla Warfare 3. Insurgents/Insurgency
Step One • Review the criteria Hoffman uses to distinguish each and compare that criteria to the criteria used by US Department of Defense (also attached below): Insurgents vs Guerrillas vs Terrorists. Create a cheat sheet that defines each with criteria.
STEP TWO: Choose 6 of the following irregulars (3 familiar, 3 unfamiliar): • Kosovo Liberation Army (PLA) • Muslim Brotherhood • Taliban • Khmer Rouge • Al Qa'ida • HAMAS (Islamic Resistance Movement) • Shining Path (Peru) • FMLN (Farabundo Marti Front for National Liberation) • Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) • Tamil Tigers • Al-Nusra Front • ISIS • Lord's Resistance Army • Viet Cong • Irish Republican Army (IRA) • People's Republic of Donetsk/Lugansk
• STEP THREE: Categorize according to Hoffman -- best fit • STEP FOUR: In groups, identify: • 1. the conflict, location and actors involved • 2. the years fought • 3. the goals of your group • 4. the outcome for your group (win, lose, draw) • STEP FIVE: Come to consensus on placing this group in one of Hoffman's categories
• STEP SIX: Present your findings for discussion. In addition to background info, explain • 1. How did you reach consensus? • 2. What initial disagreement did you have? • STEP SEVEN: EMAIL IT TO ME
