PCC RDA BIBCO Standard Record BSR in RDA
PCC RDA BIBCO Standard Record (BSR) in RDA instruction number order Part 1 of 2 Presented by UC Berkeley Fall/Winter 2013/14
Days 3 -4 Learning Objectives • Apply the BSR (PCC Core) and UC Berkeley Policy Statements to describe print textual monographs (non-rare) • Find RDA instructions and Policy Statements for PCC Core elements within the RDA Toolkit • Distinguish substantive differences between AACR 2 rules and RDA instructions (plus local guidelines) for PCC Core elements • Exercise appropriate judgment when reviewing existing RDA copy for inclusion in the local catalog @ UCB 2
Acronyms BSR = BIBCO Standard Record LC-PCC PS = Library of Congress–Program for Coop. Cat. Policy Statement (RDA equiv. of LCRI) UCB PS = UC Berkeley Policy Statement (local policy) WEMI = Work, Expression, Manifestation, Item (FRBR Group 1 entities) PFC = Person, Family, Corporate body (FRBR Group 2 entities) AAP = Authorized Access Point (RDA equiv. of “heading”) @ UCB 3
A walk through the BSR MAP • Focus on elements typically applicable to nonrare books – and skip the rest (for now) • Look at elements or instructions not in BSR: very important and/or very different from AACR 2 • Why in RDA instruction number order? Because MARC is going away! (in several years) @ UCB 4
A walk through the RDA Toolkit some patterns in the structure • Sections – begin with “general guidelines” chapter – followed by chapters on elements to which the general guidelines apply • Chapters – most begin with “scope” or “purpose and scope” subchapter – plus one or more additional general subchapters – followed by subchapters on specific elements or categories of elements @ UCB 5
A walk through the RDA Toolkit some patterns in the structure cont’d • Subchapters on specific elements (or categories of elements) – most begin with “basic instructions” applicable to the elements • Instructions – may include examples (on yellow background), exceptions, optional additions or omissions, and/or alternatives (all with a vertical green bar) – Keep reading; the end of the instruction is at the title for the next instruction – Indented italicized “if”s are not subordinate! @ UCB 6
Transcription RDA 1. 7 • Apply only to transcribed elements • Which elements are transcribed? – BSR MAP: marked with a (T) – RDA Toolkit: indicated within the instruction on recording the element § instruction title “Recording [element name]” § often refers back to “Basic Instructions” subchapter § instruction says “Transcribe” @ UCB 7

264: General Changes from AACR 2 • Places and names are transcribed as they appear – Do not omit information, except (optionally) levels of corporate hierarchy (see UCB PS 2. 8. 1. 4) e. g. resource has: California Department of Public Health, Office of Binational Border Health may record as: Office of Binational Border Health – Do not abbreviate – Do not spell out abbreviations – Do not correct inaccuracies • No more Latin abbreviations for unavailable data • Minor changes in how to record supplied dates @ UCB 62
264 Basics for published resources • Always give 264 _1 $a, $b, and $c (Publication Statement, RDA 2. 8) • Preferred sources of information: first choice – Place of publication: same source as publisher’s name (RDA 2. 8. 2. 2) – Publisher’s name: same source as title proper (RDA 2. 8. 4. 2) – Date of publication: same source as title proper (RDA 2. 8. 6. 2) • Second choice of source of information for all publication elements: another source within the resource @ UCB 63
264 Basics for published resources cont’d • When publication information is present within the resource, transcribe place and name as they appear on the preferred source; apply RDA 1. 8 for dates • When publication information is not present within the resource, go to the other sources of information listed in RDA 2. 2. 4 • What if you still can’t identify the info? @ UCB 64

264 Basics cont’d What about the rest? (2 nd ind 2, 3, 4) • Not Core unless the corresponding element in the Publication Statement is not identified • First, try to identify Distribution Statement element(s) (RDA 2. 9) • If that fails, next try to identify Copyright Date (if you still need a date) (RDA 2. 11) • If that fails, finally try to identify Manufacture Statement element(s) (RDA 2. 10) @ UCB 66
264 Basics One way to visualize it: a mini spreadsheet 264 $a - Place $b - Name $c - Date _1 - Publication stmt _2 - Distribution stmt _4 - Copyright date _3 - Manufacture stmt • Start with the first row and work your way down • If the “… not identified” phrase is in any cell or the cell is empty, move down to the next row in that column • For all but the first row, leave the cell empty if you can’t identify the element • For each column, stop when you have “real” data or when you get to the bottom, whichever happens first • Assemble the result @ UCB 67
264 Examples • Source of information within the resource has: Open Hand Publishing, Inc. , Seattle, Washington Distributed by The Talman Company, Inc. , New York, NY © 1991 • RDA: PCC Core 264 _1 $a Seattle, Washington : $b Open Hand Publishing, Inc. , $c [1991] • RDA: going beyond Core (additions) 264 _2 $a New York, NY : $b Distributed by The Talman Company, Inc. 264 _4 $c © 1991 @ UCB 68
