Media Portrayals • West is land of future • United States – dominant. Leaving ‘others’ behind • Do this through setting up binary oppositions in representations • E. g. Islam is the enemy that must be defeated. We must fear Russia and North Korea. • Clear division based on race and ‘otherness’ • Do these portrayals bring self fulfilling prophecies?
TASK – Beyonce Formation • Think about Hurricane Katrina and Black Lives Matter Movement • How are binary oppositions and ‘otherness’ depicted? • Task 2 – write a perfect paragraph explaining how the music video relates to Gilroy’s theory. • P – explain theory • E – identify representations in music video • E – state how these reps support or disprove theory
