Patterns of Settlement
Map of Early Human Migration Source: https: //en. wikipedia. org/wiki/File: Spreading_homo_sapiens. svg Where did they settle? Why?
If you were an earlier settler of North America, how would the information in map help you decide where to settle? SOURCE: CIA. gov
How would the information in map help you decide where to settle? What additional factors would you consider when deciding where to settle?
Why do people settle where they do? • A combination of physical and human geographic factors. • Generally, higher populations are concentrated where factors contribute to helping make life and work easier.
Physical Factors Influencing Where People Settle • Natural Resources -people settle close to fertile soils and often near where resources are abundant • Bodies of Water -people tend to settle near sources of fresh water but also concentrated near the coast not far from the ocean • Climate -people settle largely in temperate climates with fewer people settling in areas experiencing extreme dry or wet weather • Landforms -fewer people settle near mountainous areas, instead they tend to live in low-lying areas
Human Factors Affecting How People Settle • Technology -improvements to public infrastructure and other technology allow for settlements to expand • Economy -people settle near natural resources as well as economic and political centers because of ease of trade, nearby markets and customers • Transportation/Trade Routes -people often settle along transportation routes such as rail lines, roads, river, and harbors • Urbanization -movement of people from rural to urban areas has been on the rise since the Industrial Revolution

What are urban and rural? • urban - inside or part of a city • rural – outside of the city, out in the country
What is urbanization? • Rise in the number of cities Result? • Rapid changes in lifestyle or culture
What is a city? • politically organized region • infrastructure • center of business and culture • innovation and technological advances • economic activity
PARTS OF THE CITY? • Central Business District (CBD) = downtown areas • Suburbs – Developed areas around the CBD • Metropolitan Area- The city, its suburbs and surrounding areas • Megalopolis- Formed when several metropolitan areas grow together • Example? – Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D. C. form the “Bos. Wash Megalopolis”
Size of Cities What affects the size of cities? -Larger near transportation routes -Larger near major trade routes
What makes cities grow? What do you see that would make a city grow? SOURCE: http: //www. malawiproject. org/about-malawi/trading-center; http: //www. stumblerz. com/five-busiest-port; http: //www. rochestersubway. com/topics/2010/11/rochesters-old-railroad-stations/
Causes of City Growth Railroads Inexpensive land outside of cities What caused cities & suburbs? Public transportation Interstate Highways
Task - Select a major North American city. Compare this image with a physical map of the same area. Afterwards, write an explanation of which landforms or water bodies have played a part in the distribution of population shown in the satellite image.
