Bald Eagle – National Bird of the United States • Large, powerful, brown bird with a white head and tail. • Became the national bird in 1782. • Can only be found in North America. • The word bald does not mean that this bird has no feathers. Instead, it comes from the word piebald, an old word which means “marked with white. ”
Liberty Bell • symbol of freedom in the United States • Rang when the Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence • Made in England in 1752 of copper and tin. • After it arrived in the US the Bell cracked. 2 more have been made from the same metal, they have cracked too!
The U. S. Flag • Has 13 stripes, seven red and 6 white, the stripes represent the 13 original colonies. • 50 stars represent the 50 states of the United States. • Was designed in 1777. • Stars are added each time a new state joins the union.
The U. S. Seal • Created by Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson in 1776. • The Great Seal was finalized on June 20, 1782. • Reflects independent nation and a free people.
what did I learn? • The bald eagle is not really bald! • The 50 stars on the US Flag represent the 50 states! • We have a US Seal! • All three of the Liberty Bells have cracked!
