Above and Beyond Was tired of CGI “simulated realism” Jeff Turley and Patrick Osborne took time off Disney for a short called Pet, made in Maya with flat color on 3 D geometry. They were pulled onto Paperman, started by John Kars Worked with Brian Whited to make Meander, software to combine 2 D and 3 D animation.
Spotlight Patrick Osborne got the idea for Feast after taking one-second video of dinner for a year. Feast was his first time writing and directing. “Google … look[s] to VR as the next major computing platform. ” They sponsor a collection of virtual reality creations, “to show off what’s possible. ” Google Spotlight Stories took on Pearl. “He and his team created the work in Autodesk’s Maya software. ”
Dealing with Disorientation First to produce virtual animated reality with hard cuts Used the car as a “visual anchor” First to produce virtual animated reality with both diegetic and non-diegetic sound Challenged to keep a stylistic look in 360 Challenged by display on different devices Computer, mobile, and VR headset
Framing “Letting the audience control the composition is crazy, but I kind of cheated that, having some car windows that you can compose with” “In VR, you have to come up with answers to questions you've never asked before. …‘What if people look away? ’ in a film … they'll miss that scene. Whereas here, you need sound to create what I call a "sonic horizon" that allows people to orient. It's a big problem in VR, feeling disoriented. So that means that stereo music basically has to go away. We had to do a mix that was spherical”
