CASE STUDY EXERCISE A female Soldier who is new to the unit is invited to a party. At the party she has several drinks. An male Soldier whom she found very handsome and charming took her under his wing. He made her feel welcome, important, and beautiful. She was smitten. After the party, he escorts her back to her room where he unexpectedly locks the door and pushes her onto the bed and starts kissing her. With a mixture of emotions, she kisses him back but when he begins pulling her shorts off she says “no” several times. He ignores her pleas and rapes her. After a few days, she discovers she has an STD and seeks out a chaplain for advice. How do you respond?

SCENARIO # 2 A female recruit in basic training is pulling fire guard duty one night, when the senior drill sergeant invites her to take a break in his office. After a very short conversation he pulls her onto his lap and begins kissing and groping her breasts and genitals. When she begins to cry, he pushes her away and says, “You’ve failed the test. My invitation to the office was to see if you’d desert your post which can get you a dishonorable discharge. If you keep your mouth shut, then I won’t report your failure to obey a lawful order. ”

SCENARIO # 3 A recent immigrant to America decided to join the Army driven by both patriotism for his adopted homeland the notion that the military could be a first step in a career. At basic training the soldiers in his unit, responding to his accent and New York City address, called him a “champagne socialist” and a “commie faggot. ” Less than two weeks after arriving on base, he was gang-raped in the barracks by men who said they were showing him who was in charge. Now he has suicidal ideation and asked to see the chaplain.

SCENARIO # 4 A 16 year old female reports being sexually abused by a soldier two days ago in a barracks room. What started out as “just kissing” ended with her being forced to have sex with the perpetrator. She is very emotional and very concerned about STDs. Feeling alone and fearful, she comes to see the chaplain who is her chapel pastor. She does not want to report the assault or tell her parents because her parents think she was at the chapel youth service when the assault occurred.
