PAST TENSE –AR VERB CONJUGATION First, lets review subjects/subject pronouns. Singular Plural 1 st Person Yo 2 nd Person Tú Nosotros/Nosotras Vosotros/Vosotras Él, ella, Ud. Ellos, Ellas, Uds. 3 rd Person (Spain & a few other countries only)

PRESENT TENSE –AR VERB CONJUGATION So far, we have learned the present tense verb conjugation of regular, irregular, and stem changing verbs. Below are the regular present tense –ar, er, & -ir verb endings. -o -as/-es -a/-e -amos/-emos/-imos -áis/-éis/-ís -an/-en

Before we learn the endings, lets get a grip of the present tense & past tense in English. Present tense is used to describe: 1. Something that is happening now…………. . . I’m going to lunch. 2. Something that is happening soon…………. . I’m going to lunch in an hour. 3. To express a general statement ……………School lunch is delicious! 4. To describe a habit ……………. . . I go to lunch every day. Past tense (also called preterite) is used to describe: 1. Something that happened in the past (at a specific time or had a specific duration) I went to lunch yesterday. Last year, we ate lunch at school.

Below are the past tense –ar verb conjugation endings. -é -aste -ó Bailar=to dance Bailé Bailaste Bailó -amos -asteis -aron Bailamos Bailasteis Bailaron

Now, think what each of these words means. Yeah, yeah. I know. The present tense and past tense nosotros forms are the same. You will have to read in context or look for words of time such as yesterday, last year, last week, etc… Bailar=to dance I danced Bailamos we danced Bailé Bailaste you danced Bailasteis You all danced Bailó He/she/you danced Bailaron They/you danced

MEMORIZE the -é -amos endings! -aste -ó -asteis -aron Besides this Power. Point, I don’t intend on giving further instruction on past tense verb conjugation to the class as a whole. The Power. OF COURSE THERE ARE IRREGULARITIES! -CAR & -GAR VERBS Verbs that end in the letters –car and –gar have a spelling change in the YO form in the preterite (past) tense. Here are some –car & -gar verbs we know. q Practicar q Tocar q Buscar q Pagar q Jugar q Llegar Knowing WHY these verbs have a spelling change will help you remember to change their spelling. The ‘yo’ conjugation in the past tense is an é. If you remember, when the letter ‘c’ is followed by an ‘e’ or an ‘i’, the sound changes to an ssssss sound instead of a k. Practicé ar This is incorrect! Practicé sounds like “practi—say” but should sound like “practi—kay”…. Which is why it should have the spelling chage of the c switching to a qu—but only in the yo form.

LET’S LOOK AT A –GAR VERB… Jugé ar WRONG—BUT WHY? Jugé sounds like ---who—hey, we’ve lost the ‘g’ sound So, change the g to a gu, and now it is jugué, keeping the ‘g’ sound.

IF THE ‘WHY’ DOESN’T HELP, JUST REMEMBER THIS… Verbs that end in –car & --gar have a spelling change only in the yo conjugation in the past tense. -car verbs change the c to a qu Practiqu é Toqué Busqué -gar verbs change the g to a gu Pagué Jugué Llegué
