PAST SIMPLE The simple past tense is used to talk about a completed action

PAST SIMPLE The simple past tense is used to talk about a completed action in a time before now. The time of the action can be in the recent past or the distant past. e. g. John Cabot sailed to America in 1498. e. g. My father died last year. e. g. He lived in Fiji two years ago. e. g. We crossed the Channel yesterday.
