Past Simple - použití Minulý čas prostý vyjadřuje děj, který se odehrál a nemá žádný vztah k přítomnosti. Často je použit ve vyprávění. They didn´t arrive on time. So we went to the cinema without them. (tehdy) Často jím vyjadřujeme sled událostí.

Past Simple and time expressions: 1) Any time expression that refers to a date before now : yesterday, last (month), in 1998, two years ago, last Christmas etc. 2) Past events: on my last birthday, at the beginning of the school year, during the second WW, when I was a boy etc.

Past Continuous - použití 1) Vyjadřuje děj, který popisuje např. prostředí ve vyprávění. It was raining and the wind was blowing. 2) Minulý čas průběhový často stává v souvětích s časem prostým. V těchto větách označuje déle trvající děj, který popisuje událost vyjádřenou časem prostým. When the phone rang, she was writing a letter. Sammy was waiting for us when we got off the plane.

Past Continuous - použití Ve větách se vyskytují spojky when nebo while. While John was sleeping last night, someone stole his car What were you doing when the earthquake started?

Past perfect - použití Předminulý čas vyjadřuje minulý děj, který skončil před začátkem jiného děje, vyjádřeného prostým minulým časem. Before he went to the cinema, he had walked in the park. (Předtím, než šel do kina, se procházel v parku. )

Past perfect - použití Vysytuje se v souvětích se spojkami when (když), after (potom, poté co), before (dříve než, předtím než), until (dokud ne), because (protože) a dalších. Jim reached the station when (after) the train had left. (Jim dorazil na nádraží, když vlak odjel. )
