PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE TENSE VERB TENSES
TENSE • What does tense mean? • The tense of a verb tells us when an action is happening. • Is it happening now? In the past? In the future? All of these are different tenses. • Verbs take different forms when they change tense. • They can change tenses by changing their ending, adding words in front of them, or changing their spelling entirely.
PRESENT, PAST, AND FUTURE • A present tense verb shows an action that is happening now • A past tense verb shows an action that has already happened • A future tense verb shows an action that will happen
PRESENT TENSE VERBS • Let’s look at the verb “keep” • How do we make this verb present tense in singular form? Joanne _____ her candles in a line. Joanne keeps her candles in a line. • To write a verb in present tense SINGULAR form, you usually add – S.
• What about “keep” in its plural form? They _____ their candles in a line. They keep their candles in a line. • To write a verb in present tense PLURAL form, you usually do not change the ending.
SPECIAL CASE • How do we change “try” to present tense singular form? He _____ his best. He tries his best. • If a verb ends in Y, drop the Y and add –IES. Try Tries
PAST TENSE VERBS • Let’s look at the verb “jump” • How do we make this verb past tense? Joanne _____ over her candles. Joanne jumped over her candles. • To write a verb in past tense form, you usually add –ED.
SPECIAL CASES • How would we change “hope” and “cry” to past tense? • If a verb ends in E, drop the E and add –ED. Hoped • If a verb ends in Y, drop the Y and add –IED. Cry Cried
• How do we change “hop” to past tense form? Hopped • For most verbs that have: • one syllable • a vowel-consonant ending (such as op, ab, etc…) double the ending consonant and add –ED
IRREGULAR VERBS • An irregular verb changes spelling to form the past tense. • Examples? Break Broke Build Built Are Were Write Wrote
FUTURE TENSE • How do we change the verb “keep” to the future tense form? Joanne _____ practicing. Joanne will keep practicing. • To write a verb in future tense form, you usually add will (or shall) before the verb.
